Forest service keeping two campgrounds open during fall season

Forest service keeping two campgrounds open during fall season

Instead of keeping some of their campgrounds closed after Labor Day, Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District is extending a trial season for some of their campgrounds, keeping them open and free for public use.

“We’ve had requests to open the campgrounds in the fall to accommodate both hunters and people who enjoy fall camping. This year we decided to experiment with an extended season to determine how much use these sites would receive after Labor Day,” said deputy district ranger Kimberly Johnson.

For the fall season, Big Hank and Bumblebee campgrounds will be open for free public use through October 31st. Visitors are required to bring their own water and pack out their own trash. Outhouses will remain open for use.

We're excited to see how the Kellogg High School's girl soccer team will go this year- last year they had a fantastic season, and this year they are fielding a new defensive line!

A year removed from making it to the finals of the district tournament, the Kellogg High School girls soccer team hopes that an inexperienced defense won't ultimately doom its hopes for the 2011 season.

Huckleberry Festival

Huckleberry Festival

In college, my roommate's mother was aghast that I and two of our other friends had never had huckleberries. She said "How could you girls not have had huckleberries?  You grew up at the foothills of the Cascades".

I love that quote. It's ten years later and I still remember it. We all grew up in Western Washington, which apparently meant to this Missouri mother that we should have all been raised on huckleberries.

Today is Free Entrance Day at national parks, in case you didn't know. It's not too late to skip out on work (I won't tell anyone), and head on out to the nearest national park. Tomorrow though, forest service employees will be attending a classroom training on Wednesday, June 22nd. That means some Idaho-Panhandle National Forests' offices will be closed for business.
