Cyclists to take over Coeur d'Alene for the Fondo

Cyclists to take over Coeur d'Alene for the Fondo

What is a Fondo? It may sound like a car or something you eat but for Coeur d'Alene, its a giant bike race that's gaining national attention.

On Saturday, September 29, cyclists will fill the streets of downtown Coeur d'Alene for the 1st annual Coeur d' Fondo. It's a race where riders can choose from four different courses that range in mileages from 108 miles to a family friendly 15 miles. And at the end riders will be rewarded for the efforts at the the Coeur d'Alene Oktoberfest.

And due to a large spike of interest nationwide, it's sure to be crowded downtown.

"When we first started out, we thought let's keep it small. Let's keep it to 200 to 500 riders," said race director Issac Mann. "But we got so many entires, we had to stop at 800."

Mann said the unanticipated spike is due to so much support from the area which led to the word being spread around the United States.

"We have people from Alaska, Georgia, Ohio, Portland and California signing up for this race," said Mann.

Highest use of Hiawatha Trail recorded over weekend

Lookout Pass officials recorded a record amount of bicyclists using the Hiawatha trail over the weekend.

The CEO of Lookout Pass, Phil Edholm, said in an email that 1,200 bicyclists traveled through the route on Sunday.

The weather may have been to blame. Not only was it clear skies, but temperatures were decently warm for recreators on the 15 mile stretch of roadway, tunnels and trestles.

The trail's planned seasonal closure is slated for September 30.

Free chairlift rides (and more) at Schweitzer

Free chairlift rides (and more) at Schweitzer

Chairlift rides can be a great part of the snow season, but now you can ride them one day for free at Schweitzer Mt. Resort.

On Saturday, June 30, the resort will offer free chairlift rides on the Great Escape Quad all day in honor of the grand opening of the resort's summer operations. There will also be a barbecue, climbing wall, Geocaching, tennis, zipline, wine tasting and free live music.

For those that ride to the top on the chairlift, there will be refreshment and hiking. However, none of the biking trails will be open due to late season snowpack.

Dad's Weekend in the Silver Valley

Dad's Weekend in the Silver Valley

Here's something fun to do this weekend for Father's Day. The gondola and mountain bike trails open this weekend for the Summer.

Dads ride for free on Sunday when accompanied by one or more of his children.  You can also golf at Galena Ridge Golf Course if you're looking for something a little more relaxing, although I'm not sure golf is always that relaxing. The indoor water park also sounds like a good option for dads and their families.

Wallace Zipline Opening Soon

(Updated 4:08 p.m.) - Looking for a new way to get your adrenaline rush this summer? David DeRoos wants to strap you into a harness and send you soaring through the air, hundreds of feet above the ground.

DeRoos and his wife Bonnie are gearing up to open Silver Streak Zipline Tours in Wallace. Silver Streak offers a total of ten different runs, 3 miles of cable in all, spread out over 250 acres.

DeRoos got the idea for for the park on a trip to Central America, where he had the opportunity to try ziplining. He came back home wanting more, and found himself looking around his own property.

"When I'm up here working and I look from one point to the other, I think, 'That would be a great place to put a zip line.'" DeRoos says.

He started doing research, came up with a business plan, and Silver Streak was born.

Catch Some Air Without Catching a Broken Bone

Catch Some Air Without Catching a Broken Bone

Snowboarders and skiers are getting some big air without the big spills this weekend at Lookout Pass.

The U.S. Airbag, 'Jump On It Tour' will be at Lookout through Sunday, February 26th. The staff built a wicked 45 degree kicker that looms a giant 15 feet off the snowpack.

The landing is a 50-foot by 50-foot super soft 10 foot airbag, giving the not so brave a little extra courage to push the limits on some previously untried tricks. Or just go all out and see what kind of mess you can make.
