A warning for Lake Coeur d'Alene bird watchers

A warning for Lake Coeur d'Alene bird watchers

We wrote a story about the Eagle Watch in Coeur d'Alene a week ago.  Tonight, the Idaho State Police are warning excited bird watchers to be careful.

They say high traffic in the area around Lake Coeur d'Alene is creating a dangerous situation.  The problem is along State Highway 97 near Interstate 90 and South to Milepost 93.

ISP says the area is already congested with traffic.  It says bird watchers in the area are making it even more hectic.  ISP says drivers should park their vehicles off the road.  It says any vehicles on the pavement will be towed.

New Forest Plan Amendment Sets Grizzly Bear Habitat Standards

New Forest Plan Amendment Sets Grizzly Bear Habitat Standards

After nearly fifteen years of debating the science of Grizzly Bear habitat, Northern Rockies Forests have finally set up a new amendment that sets the standards for forest planning.

The amendment sets the standards for motorized access in national forests and the northern third of the Idaho Panhandle forest. It doesn’t affect on-the-ground forest plans, but sets goals and standards for future planning.

Jason Kirchner, forest public affairs, has only been with the project for two years, but some employees have been working on this project since the beginning in the late 1990s.

“This decision, for us, is the best balance between maintaining the access for recreaters and maintaining the bears -- and the science supports that,” Kirchner said.

North Idaho Families Recall Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree

North Idaho Families Recall Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree

It’s about time to start thinking about holiday decor if you’re a household that likes to seasonally decorate. Regional forest service agencies are opening the outdoors for Christmas tree hunting. Some will make the trek into the wilderness for the perfect tree. Some gave up years ago and take up the task of dragging the fake tree from the basement. To each their own.

A few neighbors shared their Christmas tree traditions -- heading into the wilderness a la Griswold familia. They recall the cold and wet weather, as well as the fathers wielding chain saws.

Matthew Gardner, Coeur d’Alene resident, remembers his parents bickering of what tree was best. The Gardner family had a big decision to make. Was the tree full enough and could it fit in their Post Falls home?

Department of Interior Recommends Idaho Backcountry for Congressional Protection

Department of Interior Recommends Idaho Backcountry for Congressional Protection

A new report suggests 18 backcountry areas that are recommended to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar for congressional protection.

At this point it’s only a preliminary list that will be used to collection local support for the foundation of a bipartisan public lands bill that they hope to pass through Congress.

The list was compiled by Deputy Secretary David J. Hayes and BLM director Bob Abbey based on input from congress, state and city officials and interested parties.

"The backcountry areas we identify in this report are by no means the only public lands that may deserve protection by Congress, but this preliminary list of possibilities shows that there is a compelling case for bipartisan legislative action to conserve lands for recreation, protection, and enjoyment," said deputy secretary David J. Hayes.

Locations from Washington, Idaho and Montana made the list. They’re not exactly localized near you, but if you find yourself traveling for vacation, check them out.

Idaho Calls This Year's Mussel Inspections Successful

Idaho Calls This Year's Mussel Inspections Successful

This year over 47,000 water crafts were inspected for invasive mussels by the Idaho Department of Agriculture. 24 of those inspections found the highly invasive mussels being transported into or through the state.

The contaminated vessels originated from federal waters in Nevada and Arizona.

“The Lower Colorado River system is known to be heavily infested with quagga mussels, and we know that many Pacific Northwest boats spend extended periods of time there,” said department director, Celia Gould. He continued, “Given the proximity to Idaho, boats that have been in those waters are considered extremely high risk.”

The mussel has yet to be found in Idaho’s waters and they hope the inspection program keeps that statistic at zero.
