Julyamsh, a chance to learn, dance, and celebrate

Julyamsh, a chance to learn, dance, and celebrate

The Pacific Northwest's largest outdoor powwow kicks off Thursday in Post Falls. Julyamsh, pronounced July-umpsh, is a four-day powwow that combines many of the tribes around the northwest for a celebration.

The Coeur d'Alene tribe will host the event that includes dancing and art at the Greyhound Park and Event Center in Post Falls.

Julyamsh committee member Cliff Sijohn says the event is a chance for the tribes to learn from each other and enjoy each other's company.

The event is free, but parking is $5. They expect between 8,000 and 10,000 people. Here's a schedule of events:

Girl Scout Cookie Pre-Orders Start Today

It’s not quite the season for finding Girl Scout cookies at the grocery store, but you can still pre-order them. You just won’t get them until after March 23rd, but if you order them now, there’s a chance you’ll forget about it so when they arrive, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

To pre-order, you have to call the Girl Scouts and they’ll set you up with a local troop to order from. The phone number is 1 (800) 827-9478.

Their on-location sales start on March 23rd until April 15th.

Beauty Pageant Planned for Lucky Friday Mine Families

A beauty pageant is being put together to raise money for the families affected by the recent closure of Lucky Friday Mine. Hecla made the decision in January to close the mine for cleaning. That decision axed about 200 employees of miners and contracted staff.

Lisa Otto calls it the Little Lucky Lass Beautiy Pageant. It’s also a silent auction planned for March 17th at 2 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Inn.

We are looking for girls ages 0-16 who would like to participate, sponsors and donations to help with this event. We also need items for the silent auction and volunteers.

To help, contact Lisa Otto at (208) 819-7077. More information is on their website.

Celebrate Jackass Day at Silver Mountain

Celebrate Jackass Day at Silver Mountain

Silver Mountain invites you to come celebrate Jackass Day on Friday, as the resort pays homage to its humble beginnings with retro lift ticket prices.

Silver Mountain is offering $11 lift tickets (plus tax) for a day of skiing, snowboarding and a party at Moguls, where guests can enjoy complimentary cake at 2pm.

Jackass Ski Bowl on Wardner Peak opened to the public in January 1968 with a single Riblet chair.   After four years, the name was changed to Silverhorn Ski Area.  Then in 1990, it became known as Silver Mountain, after a major expansion of trails on Kellogg Peak

"We have a lot of guests who have been coming here since the late 60's and early 70's and have fascinating stories of the early days at Jackass Ski Bowl and the Tamarack Lodge," said general manager Jeff Colburn, via a Silver Mountain press release.

Guests are encouraged to wear or bring their Jackass Ski Bowl and Silverhorn Ski Area logo wear.

A warning for Lake Coeur d'Alene bird watchers

A warning for Lake Coeur d'Alene bird watchers

We wrote a story about the Eagle Watch in Coeur d'Alene a week ago.  Tonight, the Idaho State Police are warning excited bird watchers to be careful.

They say high traffic in the area around Lake Coeur d'Alene is creating a dangerous situation.  The problem is along State Highway 97 near Interstate 90 and South to Milepost 93.

ISP says the area is already congested with traffic.  It says bird watchers in the area are making it even more hectic.  ISP says drivers should park their vehicles off the road.  It says any vehicles on the pavement will be towed.

Bullets and Ink: A Man's Spin On Life

Bullets and Ink: A Man's Spin On Life

Doyle Wheeler approaches life just like he does pens; everything is possible. Throw anything his way and he will make it work for him.

The first lathe Wheeler ever received was from his father. He tinkered with it off and on, not really committing to the craft but enjoying the rhythm of turning a pen. The first ones he ever made became Christmas gifts for family and friends but he insists they weren't any good.

It's what every budding artist – excuse me, craftsman – would say of their early work.

Craftsmanship is in Wheeler's blood. His grandparents built their home in Spokane from the ground up.
