Athol man allegedly crashes car into Cd'A airport

A wild ride through the Coeur d'Alene area early this morning ended with a man in jail and his car crashed.

At about 1 a.m. Friday, a Kootenai County Sheriff's deputy attempted to execute a traffic stop for a stop sign violation on a black Honda Civic at Lacey Avenue and Government Way in Hayden. The driver eventually stopped for the deputy, but as the officer approached, the driver sped away, according to a news release from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department.

A short pursue ensued, but the deputy discontinued it “due to the fleeing car's excessive speeds" as well as poor weather conditions. The deputy was able to infer that the driver was Jared L. Salamina, 22, of Athol, “based on the driver's actions, and research of the license plate.”

The sheriff's office received an anonymous tip from a caller claiming to have picked up Salamina where he had allegedly crashed his vehicle near the Cd'A Airport. The caller also said that Salamina's parents were going to take him to the hospital.

Alleged murderer granted continuance

COEUR D'ALENE, ID - The federal trial for a 48-year-old Winchester man who was indicted for the 1st-degree murder of his mother last June has been continued until September 17th.

Kenneth Broncheau was originally scheduled to stand trial on March 5 in U.S. District Court in Coeur d'Alene, but according to court documents, "the ends of justice for a continuance outweigh the Defendant's and the public's interest in a speedy trial" and "without such continuance defendant's counsel will not have adequate time to prepare, considering due diligence."

Plummer Worley school district superintendent makes statement on sequestration

Below is a statement from the Plummer Worley School District superintendent:

If Congress doesn’t act in the next week, America will be faced with debilitating cuts to nearly every non-defense discretionary program at the federal level. But these cuts are not sequestered to the federal level alone – they will cut into everything we do in our county, city and school district.

At a Valentine’s Day Senate Appropriations hearing on the “impacts of the sequestration,” Congress considered just what kind of “love note” they would like to extend to the American people.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan testified at that meeting and here’s what he said about the federal Impact Aid Program – a program that helps educate more than 400 students in our area:

US 95 crash forces one to be airlifted to Sacred Heart

MOSCOW, ID - Two Lewiston residents were injured this morning following a collision south of Moscow at 9:02 a.m. According to the Idaho State Police, 32-year-old Alisha Nielson was driving a 2009 Volkswagon Jetta northbound on US 95 coming down Riesenhauer Hill at milepost 339 when she lost control on a curve, slide into the southbound lane, and sideswiped a 2002 Kenworth semi and trailer, which was stopped in the southbound lanes.

34-year-old Shane Moyer was standing outside the truck and was struck by Nielson. After striking the truck, Nielson's vehicle slid back across the travel lanes and came to rest on the northbound shoulder.

Snow pack at lowest level in three years

The watershed that serves Lake Coeur d' Alene and the Spokane River is sitting at 79-percent of what's considered normal, it's lowest level in three years.

You might be able to blame the lack of snow on the jet stream but Mark Beattie, a manager at Mountain Gear, is ready to dive on his ski pole and take full responsibility.

"The theory is proven. I bought a pair of big fat skis and the day that I got them was the last day we had a good snowfall," he explained.

Our snow season started out strong enough with some ski resorts opening in time for Thanksgiving but around New Years the really storms started missing our mountains.

vo "Overall, we've noticed a significant lack of motivation for people to go skiing because there hasn't been new, soft snow," Beattie said.

Resorts and ski shops aren't the only outfits missing the fresh power. Avista would like to see a little more snow on the mountain tops as well.
